March 6th, 2007 : Snowy Tuesday
The wind howled outside my window. It was cold, and it was dark. In my room, I was nice and warm, and my creamer filled coffee tasted great on my tongue. Snow swirled downward at my window, which was located on the second floor of the building. I dreaded work, which I knew would come in a couple of hours. I had to be in the office by eight, and I was really looking forward to spending the day with a book in front of the fireplace while the snow swirled softly from the sky. I was tempted to call in sick, but I knew that would only make things harder for me in the long run. It was best if I just took advantage of the hour I had now, to just relax and have some me time.
I took another sip of coffee. It was only Tuesday, and I had a whole week’s worth of work to get done. My boss was out of town for a vacation and business meeting all rolled into one, and it was up to me to not only accomplish my regular tasks, but keep everyone on track through the transition of our companies network system. The whole process was the worse timed mess I have ever experienced. We started the project in June, first getting all of our data compiled, and then getting new hardware and software. We were all set up to make the transition when we had a few technical difficulties, and things were pushed back. Finally, just in time for the holiday shopping spree, our busiest time of year, everything is ready for our transition, my boss gives us the “Okay, let’s do it” and skips town. I really wonder if I should have seen this coming a few months ago.
It’s not like I could push the job off onto someone else either, because I am the senior employee, by about eight years on everyone else. Most of the people are new, and having trouble with their own jobs. This new transition of software and hardware should help them out, but I had to oversee the installation of everything.
My window was white, I couldn’t even see my backyard. If I didn’t live so close to the office, I would definitely have called into work sick today. Since I am only a block away, people usually stop in on their lunch break to say hi when I do that, and then my boss finds out I am not really sick. Maybe I should move.
I looked at the clock, and it was almost 7:45. Time to go to work. I refilled my coffee mug, grabbed my jacket and left my apartment. The lock clicked as I closed the door.
